The original on East Grand
Los Laureles opened in the early 1990s next to La Tienda Mexicana, Iowa's first Mexican grocery, and brought Jalisco and Michoacán cooking to Des Moines: carnitas, al pastor, tortas, pozole, ceviche and fresh salsas with every basket of chips.
Today the restaurant anchors La Placita, the Latino business district along East Grand Avenue.
